Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - The Myth of akwụkwọ anaghi atụ asị in Igbo Discourse

Wonderful essay. The last sentence set me thinking. Remembering and re-membering; forgetting and remembering to forget. The question then is: Is it memory that humanises humans or that socialises us into the human community? And if human memory shuts down, partially or totally), do i cease to be human or a member of the human community? The issue is really not about human memory "deciding" or "not deciding" to remember. The real issue is what happens to me if i fail to remember?

What role does memory play in the thinking community? By setting memory apart from sentience, is the question not already answered?

record certain things in a book (OFF RECORD, as they say), but human
memory can never decide not to remember what it has recorded. To
decide to forget is to remember what one has decided to forget."
