I was told by a Nigerian Journalist friend (from the then North-based NEW NIGEIAN newspaper) that when Professor Ishaya Audu earned his doctorate and returned to Nigeria, he was met at the airport with a brass band, and that his elders in the North made sure that he rode in an open car, followed by loud brass band music. In the end, he reportedly received a Mercedes Benz as an "appreciation and congratulatory" gift from his Northern elders. Is that correct? If so, what did they give him when he became the VC of ABU?

You are right. He was the foreign minister under Aliyu Shagari and the first vice chancellor of ahmadu Bello University. I did not think anyone would remember him, hence my decision to remind peope of Ojo Madueke.
