My name is Luiz Estrella and I am the editor of a Facebook page named The History of Photography. This community is dedicated to sharing photography produced between mid-19th century and the First Great War. I have chosen this specific period because it´s events such as the American Civil War, the rise of the great colonial empires and the World War I paved the way for world as we know today.
Our comprehensive collection has more than 9.500 photos, the great majority unpublished, depicting more than 1.300 locations around the world. After two years if intensive online research we have identified at least 700 sources in 56 countries with iconographic material that match our publishing criteria. The collection has works by such master photographers as William Henry Fox Talbot, Timothy O'Sullivan, Eugene Atget, Alfred Stieglitz and others
In order to facilitate the users´ experience, the Facebook collection has been organized into 87 albums. Photographs are stored in 83 albums according to geographical criteria. The remaining four albums are dedicated to portraits of notable people, astronomical observations made until 1920 and the Great War ( 1914-1918 ). You can notice that unlike other similar pages, we have adopted a policy of always mention the sources from which we have extracted the photographic material. For every photo published at least three information are available to help users understand the context of the image: the original or adapted title, year of production and the source.
