Exciting news for youth this summer...

The Spotlighting and Promoting African Canadian Experiences (SPACE) Initiative, in the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and Its Diasporas at York University invites youth ages 14-18 (or grade 9 to grade 12) to participate in its eighth annual Student Summer Program, "An Introduction to African Diasporas."

Youth will participate in daily activities (art, dance, creative writing, sport, storytelling, music, workshops and trips) that will give them an overview of the contributions of African peoples and cultures to the historical development of the world. Experienced educators, facilitators, volunteers and students from York University will delivers all the sessions. 

During fun and creative sessions, students will:

  • Explore historical and contemporary experiences of African descended persons.
  • Examine identity making amongst African, Afro-Caribbean,  Afro-Latin American, Afro-Brazilian, African American, and African Canadian peoples.
  • Consider how the ideologies of race and gender function in different societies.
  • Learn about museums, archives and the preservation of memory, including dance  and music traditions in Africa and the African Diaspora, and specifically in African Canadian contexts.
  • Explore how to digitize historical records through working sessions with photographs and documents featuring communities in Africa, the Caribbean and the African Diaspora. 
  • Learn about, participate in and make their own African inspired cultural productions.

The program will run daily for two weeks, from July 4 to July 14, 2017 at York University, from 8:30am — 3:30 pm. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The youth will have the opportunity to accumulate community hours and an official certificate from the Harriet Tubman Institute at York University will be awarded to students on completion of the program.
