The word "capture" by Gowon was a thorough misrepresentation of the facts. The Biafrans were not "captured." It was the Biafran leadership that reached out through Patrick Amadi who made contact, first with Akirinnade. They opened the corridors for him, and they took him to Amichi. They let him go, and he made contact with Obasanjo, commander of the 3rd Marine Commando, who arrived through the same corridor at Amichi, and within the two days, as any Biafran  would remember, the fronts, including those established behind the lines were suddenly collapsed. The sudden collapse of these fronts was also agreed upon. Biafran commanders were issued the same Barclays Bank check for Ten Thousand pounds each to collapse their fronts in 1970. Incidentally the checks had the same numbers, and when these men came to Lagos to collect their money, were all arrested at the Marina Barclays bank- another example of the reneging. In any case, Effiong ignored the use of the word "capture" by addressing the gathering in his full command rank. "Captured" Generals do not do that. As a matter of fact he made it clear if you make the full hints of his speech that he was still in full command until the very moment he said, "Biafra ceases to exist." The clue should be, if the Biafrans were captured, why was it not by Shuwa, who was operating much closer? There are certain aspects of the story of that war that folks should eally stop gleaning from street lore. Do a little more research. Talk to the actors, some of whom have written, and some of whom refused to write. A great store of that lore, Ben Obumselu just died. But his papers are intact.

There may have been no victors and no vanquished but the use of the word "capture" in Gowon's speech undermined the idea of a peaceful resolution of the Nigerian Civil War. It was a failed secession bid. The conditions responsible for that failure still exist. Those who want Biafra should sincerely try to find out who want to be part of Biafra and for what reason.

Yes,leaders of the old Biafra surrendered, but that does not and should not prevent new agitations, as long as such new agitations are carried out according to Internationally approved methods.
