What devastating news! An exceptional intellectual and humanist with stunning insight, rare knowledge and remarkable generosity. He was able to bridge so many different cultures, languages, concepts and artistic approaches. In the present world situation, his departure will be leaving a very deep void, one that African Studies will not overcome easily. May he continue to guide us from the land of the Ancestors.

--Thanks toyin for letting us know. It is big news for those of us in african literary studies. I passed on the word to the african literature association, and wrote this to my colleagues:Just received notice of the passing of abiola irele. Abiola was a founder of african literary criticism, a major figure in bringing francophone scholarship, esp on negritude, to our anglophone brothers and sisters; an editor of RAL after the passing of bjornson, a major voice for african studies, a generous humanist, an insightful scholar, and a friend to many many of us.And a lover and singer of opera!Abiola irele. An iroko tree in our forest of scholars.Perhaps most impressive among his many works was the critical edition he did of Le cahier d'un retour au pays natal. An extraordinary commentary and edition of that great classic, that was treated with real brilliance. He was a past president of our association, and with his booming voice a wonderful presence who always was inviting us to join in.kenKenneth Harrow

Subject: Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Obituary: Abiola Irele--Goodness! Another great tree suddenly taken out of the dwindling forest of African literary and intellectual circles! One of the greatest and true multilingual literary icons of our time. This is doubt no a big vacuum so difficult to fill. Professor Irele will forever be missed. May all those the great thinker has left behind be comforted!Michael O. AfolayanOn Monday, July 3, 2017 6:31 AM, Toyin Falola <toyin...@austin.utexas.edu> wrote:
