May the Almighty be with him always, his family, his nearest and dearest.
It's also devastating news for his disciples, publishers, students. Thank God that he was here and dwelt amongst men. Well meant clichés such as "a light has gone out" would be inappropriate as metaphor since light can neither die or be destroyed or terminated. His influence and his legacy live on and his mission will continue, "concatenated without abruption". Hopefully, he will soon return (gilgul neshamot) as Baba-tunde.
My Better Half & I attended all of his unforgettable seminars at the Institute of African Studies at Legon in 1970 - when he was a dashing, eloquent, learned and not very conventional thirty four year old doyen and that's how I remember him, in his khaki shorts and sandals. He was equally fascinating outside of the seminar room. He and Jawa Apronti were the literature and language dynamo at a time when the then James Ngugi was writer in residence and Gerald Moore was a guest professor...
