With all the information now at our disposal it is now evidently true that the single most import threat to the unity and co-existence of Nigeria came from the military institution.
We now know that the military meticulously planned to highjack the nations polity long before the events of 1966 transpired. From the knowledge of prolegomenary testing of the waters by Yakubu Gowon, Emeka Ojukwu and Victor Banjo it is obvious no region was left untainted (Ojukwu knew why despite earning a degree and to the chagrin and disapproval of his father he chose to enlist in the Army) so cross- fires of ethnic mudslinging is puerile.
The time is now due for the military institution to tender an unreserved apology to ALL Nigerians ( not just the Igbo, not just the North, not just the minorities and not just the Yoruba.
It is now time for the military institution to tender an unreserved apology through their living most senior officers: Yakubu Gowon for the North and Olusegun Obasanjo for the South rather than insulting Nigerians sensibilities with songs of praise and prayers to Gods who did not ask them to instigate coups.
It is time for the military institution to tender an unreserved apology co-signed by Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo for the raping of the Nigerian psyche through unnecessary coups and envy-induced counter coups (and the physical raping of Nigerians in the context war and brigandage.)
It is now time for the Nigerian military through their living most senior members who witnessed the inception of military criminality Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo to apologise to the whole nation on behalf of their fellow members including but not limited to Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Adekunle Fajuyi, Emeka Ojukwu, Mohammodu Buhari Adeyinka Adebayo, Ibrahim Babangida, Victor Banjo, Murtala Mohammed, David Ejoor and those military officers who while wearing the military uniform procured by tax payers money yet went ahead and took political offices for more than 24 hrs.
It is high time the military through their most senior living officers Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo apologise to the Nigerian nation on behalf of lpast and current officers for dealing with citizens as second class citizens whom the military has every right to walk all over when it suits them; time it is to pledge never to allow or encourage a repetition and to lay down their lives fighting to ensure any future attempt is quashed.
Time it is for the military to tender an unreserved apology to ALL Nigerians for taking them through decades of pain and anguish. Then will Nigerians consider forgiveness.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
