The stories of Nigeria's former petroleum minister make rounds everywhere: on social media, press, television. Scandalous. Very scandalous in the scale, if true.
Some questions:
- If she could steal so much, how much, then, would Abacha, Babangida, Obasanjo etc could possibly have stolen?
- Is there a total lack of institutional control in a govt. that a minister can just steal, and steal, and steal? Is the civil service dead?
- If institutional controls are so weak, what is the worth of democracy?
- Can this kind of democracy create strong institutions? If it cannot, why can't we rethink it?
Where is Samuel Zalanga? His analyses on matters like this are always peerless.
