Congratulations to my writing Ninja, Kazuo Ishiguro!
The master craftsman with a kind of detached restraint has worked his way patiently to the top of the pile, giving us a vision of spare elegance in his eclectic and delicate use of language and imagination while genre hopping. Ishiguro, to whom memory is a tease, pulls you slowly into his sophisticated stories of missing puzzles. You know you are going, but you just can't draw back. When he's had you in a hold, you don't beg to leave; you relax and get lost in other layered worlds of intricately woven experiences probingly poking your consciousness with individual dilemmas, shaped by different questions around basic morality and life choices.
Ishiguro is a literary philosopher who easily glides in and out of the beauty and barbarity of cultural spaces and fastidious traditions, a mole that exhumes historical crimes in the minds of characters whose pasts are tied to the sordidness of national visions, hellish visions. He explores 'personal arenas' and their intersection with the big world that always unbalances settled notions of the secret and public self. With Ishiguro, there's always something bubbling under a surface. There's always ignorance, darkness, drama, love, family, loyalty, mortality and chaos - all moving on nicely, tightly, even quietly through his pages. He's a writer who strikes your intellect with seemingly little force, but who always leaves a sublime and great impact. This Nobel, like the Booker, is well deserved.
Kudos, Ishiguro! More ink to your pen!
