Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Kazuo Ishiguro - Google Search

We can't ask for equity based on nationality. Germany has a list of classical musical composers that would encompass the rest of the world…sort of. whereas all of scandanavia would have trouble coming up with one or two. Well, ok, Sibelius was great. But most Swedish Norwegian, Danish, and even finnish composers were second rate classical musicians. Grieg was good. name a third.

Africa has its share of magnificent world musicians. But they earned it, and deserve the recognition. No one gave it to them to achieve equity of representation.

Prof. Ogungbemi:

I join you in rooting for the next Naija to win this coveted prize. Unfortunately (for Nigerians), but fortunately for the whole world, it's not a "turn-by-turn" affair. The table below shows that Sweden has only eight "sons/daughters of the soil" in this preeminent list, a "whole Canada" has just one like Naija; while France has a whopping 16!!!

In Nigeria, the Swedish Academy would be hard-pressed to explain this "disrespect" to  their country.

In 2013, I (along with Maj Gen Mohammed Inuwa Idris, then Deputy Commandant & Director of Studies --a US Army War College, Carlisle, PA and National Defense University, Washington, DC graduate) at the National Defense College, Abuja, fought a two-hour long battle at the SG Forum meeting over whether or not the Best Overall Student award and the Chief of Defense Staff award should go to a Nigerian rather than to then Capt Seth Amoama (Ghana Navy) who beat all the other 134 students in Course 21 by the widest margin ever in the 21-year history of the College. We won that battle, thankfully. At the award ceremony, the then Nigerian Senate President, David Mark (Chairman of the occasion) effusively bragged about how open-minded and friendly Nigerians are, but chastised future NDC students NEVER to let this happen again.

Seth Amoama is now a Rear Admiral (Ghana Navy) and currently Commandant, Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Teshie, Ghana where many Nigerians have earned so many laurels both as students and instructors over the years. Admiral Amoama hosted me and my students (in the Arizona State University's Global Education and Future of War Program) in Teshie this past May to the world's most sumptuous party ever. However, I never cease teasing the Admiral that every good thing he has comes from Naija -- including his M. Sc., Strategic Studies degree from University of Ibadan, and his favorite Jolloff Rice!

Any way, let's have the next Nobel laureate from Nigeria. :).

Okey

Peace as always!
