Very interesting indeed. Presumably, if the masses are patient and wait, "in the long run," things will get better. But John Maynard Keynes long ago gave an answer to this framework of reasoning. He said, "in the long run, we are dead." On the other hand, Soren Kierkegaard characterizes this kind of situation as "the teleological suspension of the ethical," -- a term he used to describe Abraham's willingness to kill his son as sacrifice to God, a terribly painful and inhumane thing to do given the cost, yet justified for a presumed greater good. In the same way, the tax bill will punish the masses and middle classes for no fault of theirs, but for the purpose of something greater in the future known as "universal human opulence." This is sad but I remember Antonio Gramsci saying one way to handle this kind of social reality is with "pessimism of the intellect" but "optimism of the heart."
