Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Today's Quote

Thanks GE for the plug. Please do not mention that the documentary won the best internation prize at a film festival lest some bad belly starts screaming that I am one of those 'genius' candidates fit for admission to St Anne's. How the parang going house to house?

Ken,   Orisa  believers
 were   criminalized during the colonial
era -  that ended in 1962.  In  order to
evade  and avoid  prosecution some Orisa followers
pretended to be Christians
or hid under that facade.

 Mainstream
Christianity was supported by the colonizers who
used Christianity as a weapon in support of
full fledged
colonization,  propaganda,  racial discrimination,
veiled insults and de-Africanization.

Among Orisa
practitioners and Believers in Trinidad is IESOM (Ile Eko
Sango/Osun Mil' Osa)
They celebrate the Rain Festival in
August. There are other Orisa religious groups.

Syncretism did occur
also. Biko has an
illuminating video on the  Trinidad "Shouter
Baptists, " that reflects this. Interestingly,
 the
Shouter Baptists
also suffered the
indignities  and pain of persecution and prosecution
even though they accepted  some aspects of
Christian theology.

Here is Biko Agozino's  informative   30
minute video on the subject:

Gloria
Do orisa worshippers not also
count themselves as Christians, belong to a church,
etc?
And what about the vaunted
Brazilian model of syncretism. What are you finding in
Trinidad and Tobago? (lucky you)

There are
about 150 million Orisa followers world wide
and probably
more. In Trinidad and Tobago, where I am right now,
 the adherents have a
public
holiday and officially recognized status.  Shango is a
special Orisa over here.

If the Nigeria Law
school should modify the dress code to accommodate Moslems
and Christians, they should also modify to accommodate,
ogun, amadioha, egbesu, etc, adherents.
