I have always wondered why anyone should feel insulted if asked
about his English speaking credentials. English is just another language,
and historically, a colonial language. No one is born with English on his tongue.
Some Welsh and Scots are actually fighting to regain their original mother tongue.
I believe that the Irish Republic has been more successful.
On a different note, I suspect that few Ethiopians are in love with English, and may be deeply offended
if English is assumed to be their native language.
But you are perfectly right about other silly insulting questions and assumptions - that
reveal a depth of ignorance. Jamaica is divided. You have the Africa-informed Rasta community
some of whom are even quite fluent in an African language, Amharic. There are also the totally uninformed
and downright silly - in their assumptions about Africa.
Ironically, in some cases, the more western educated- the more silly the assumptions.
About bookstores: I have been told that there are no bookstores in Equatorial Guinea
and, as we know, the 55 countries of Africa are usually conflated into one by the uninformed.
It is interesting to know that having a bookstore is now an indication of progress. I thought that bookstores,
like newspapers, are on their way out.
