...Dear Chidi,
You know this poem : Lord don't move that mountain, just give me the strength to climb ?
This is as good as it gets and it's almost as if you could read my mind just fifteen minutes ago , chatting with my late brother's Better Half Debra : I had posted this and I think that she has had some experience of the Witnesses knock-knocking on her door , but exactly as I told her, sure, the Witnesses may come knock-knock-knocking on your door, but to be fair to them, ( just like some wannabe presidents of Sierra Leone, just before the election on March 7th this year) they don't talk so much about the hell fire that could be the punishment for pernicious corruption ; they talk more about the new heaven, the new garden of Eden on the new earth, a time when the lion and the lamb will be frolicking together in loving peace and harmony in the meadows...
I must confess that the Islamists are less passive and more practical : If shit happens, take a hostage...
Malcolm X : "There is nothing in our book, the Qur'an, that teaches us to suffer peacefully. Our religion teaches us to be intelligent. Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone lays a hand on you, send him to the cemetery. That's a good religion."
It's funny how your memory can sometimes play tricks on you ; could it be in the service of enlightened self-interest? Somehow I used to remember that quote as going, " Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone lays a hand on your woman , send him to the cemetery. It's a good religion!"
