Title: Exile and Migration: Reflections of African Scholars in Foreign Academies

Whether forced or voluntary, Africans have been migrating in response to what is broadly classified as the pull-push factors of migration. In the last several decades, many have migrated primarily because of the stifling and unhealthy social, economic and political space in their respective countries. Within this large pool of immigrants are scholars and intellectuals who left the continent for the intellectually fertile grounds of Europe, North America, and the Middle East. While many of these scholars left on their own volition, others were forced out.

Whether migration was voluntary or compelled, it can have both a negative and a positive impact on the émigré. Leaving one's family and the familiar can be painful; yet, being able to start anew in an environment of near-endless possibilities can be invigorating. At the very least, many of the tools and resources that are lacking in their homeland are available in their new countries. There is a level of academic-freedom that is available in places like the US, UK, Australia and Canada, for instance, that is not available in countries like Nigeria, Namibia, Zambia, and Ethiopia. Nonetheless, many African scholars and intellectuals must contend with campus culture, politics, and attitude that can be distressing, demoralizing, and painful.

What are these distressing and demoralizing campus culture, politics and attitude? In what ways do these negatives affect African scholars and intellectuals who hold teaching, research, and administrative positions? While some African scholars in the US, for instance, points to the hostile behavior of their African American colleagues and colleagues from the Caribbean; others point to the biased evaluation they sometimes receive from White and Asian students. There are other issues African scholars and intellectuals in foreign academies must contend with. Hence, you are invited to investigate any of the issues you may be familiar with – a few are listed below:
