Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: In Memory of Dr. VALENTINE OJO....May His Soul Rest In Perfect Peace [ Remembering a One Time Member ofthis Forum]

Remarkable man indeed! So it's been four years? Wow!!! No wonder the hymn writer wrote. . .

Time like the ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

Bye to the renaissance mind!

Dr. Valentine Ojo was indeed a remarkable person who touched many lives with his warmth and legendary hospitality. As an Internet soldier,  he was truculent in the defence of his  views  and positions throughout.  May his soul continue to rest in peace.

Before meeting the Confluence, I believed he must be ten foot tall, yet when he stood before me he was a small giant whose voice was truly ten foot. His voice was like an ocean wave  that boomeranged, and carried round the dance hall.
His short  diminutive stature, his strong lean chin and near-toothed gap smiles, reminded me of another pipe smoking small statured giant, Benjamin Adekunle.
When I first shook the Confluence's strong hand, with his beaming smiles and wittiness that melted any misgivings I might harbored about him, I knew not why my mind was reminded of the Black Scorpion Of Adelabu Street, Ikate.
As a youngster who knew way around the neighborhood and played "street soccer" at Adelabu, I had the privilege of studying the facial structure of the Black Scorpion.
In first encountering Valentine Ojo, I had no doubts in my mind, they both had same small stature, same booming but disarming smiles, same outreaching wittiness, and even the French suit were tailored same as the Black Scorpion.
On first setting eyes on the Confluence, I thought I was seeing an reincarnation!

Beneath all his outward online-forum's powerful and hardly yielding orations and all, Valentine Ojo was a gentle teddy bear in person.
Could anyone believed the Confluence of Ironies bear hugged me on our first encounter at Matto's shindig, as if we were long lost buddies or siblings, and gentlemanly pulled out a chair for my wife?
I had no choice even if I hadn't thought of the gesture, than to emulate his gentlemanliness to rush over to his beauty of a wife and pulled out a chair.
That was the epitome of his leadership quality, he never knew how to follow, it was natural of him to just do it.
Though his stature was diminutive, he was a giant.
Though he was never in the army, he was an army General among the Forum's array of Midgets.
I continue to miss him!

Dr. VALENTINE OJO "Val" Of Tall Timbers, MD passed away August 23, 2014, after a protracted illness; surrounded by his loving family.

Born on February 14, 1948 in Ondo, Nigeria, Val was the eldest child of the late Chief Jerome Ojo (Baba D2) and Rose Eunice Ojo. He obtained his early childhood education at St. Mathew's (RCM) Primary School and St. Joseph's College (Secondary School), both in Ondo town.

Valentine married his beloved wife, Agathachristy Ngozi, in August 1989. An avid reader and prolific writer, Val was a linguist who was very fluent in several languages. He started his undergraduate studies at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria and continued to the then Soviet Union where he obtained his first and second degrees. He earned another Master's degree and the doctorate at the University of Tubingen, Germany (1978).

Before relocating to, and settling in the United States with his family, Dr. Ojo was a professor of German and Italian at the University of Ife (Obafemi Awolowo University), Nigeria; and traveled extensively throughout Europe. A proud educator, Dr. Ojo taught at St. Mary's College of MD, Lincoln University in PA, and Prince George's County public schools. He served on the Archdiocese of Washington School Board of Education and on the Mediation Committee of St. Mary's County. He was a passionate participant on internet for African and Nigerian political and social-economic issues. Val also enjoyed music, photography, gardening, biking and camping.

He was a connoisseur of good music and good wine. However, his greatest love was for his family whose company he relished; he was particularly committed to the well-being and education of his children.

Dr. Ojo leaves behind to cherish his memories: his beloved wife; four children, Mayowa, Omolayo Mayokun and Omotayo; siblings, Vitalis Ojo, Lucrentia Abdullahi and Crescentia Adelabu; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Venantius Ojo and a sister, Emerentia Akintewe.

Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Facial Tribal Marks readings request

I would be careful to use the right terminology.  I  tend to say "identification marks" instead of tribal marks but I am still searching for a better term.

It is a form of surgery so facial surgery may be a candidate. Facial scarification

may be another possibility although when I looked up the term I realized that  it is

often associated with artwork these days.

Colonial anthropologists often used terms to devalue rather than to uplift.

USA Africa Dialogue Series - Facial Tribal Marks readings request

The USA-African Dialogue Family,

I am sourcing historical accounts and other scholarly papers on the phenomenon of tribal marks (facial) in Africa. I will appreciate a broad African literature but a concentration on the South West of Nigeria.

This is an area that steps outside of my comfort zone of Business and Management literature, so please do treat my request as one seeking complete guidance from a naïve position.

Can you please point me in the right direction? [gbola.gbadamosi@gmail.com]

Many thanks,

Gbolahan Gbadamosi

USA Africa Dialogue Series - Today's Quote

"Social media influencers", instead of advising IPOB members that "discretion is the better part of valour", you encourage them(by your posts) to confront ill-trained, half-drunk, gun-wielding and trigger-happy security with empty hands, so that you would have contents (dead bodies) to post on your social media walls! You're evil!

USA Africa Dialogue Series - Totally edited : Keeping an eye on the Middle East, where the Bible and the Quran came from

Pan-Africanism, OK, not so many disputes about that although, listening to Julius Malema preaching Pan-Africanism is reminiscent of Old Major' speech in Animal Farm, except that whereas we know how Old Major's dream ended, today, when we listen to Brother Julius Malema talking about a future borderless continent of Africa, with one currency, one parliament, one president, maybe a united military under the African Messiah's command, we begin to realise what a very short life-span we are entitled to, at least in this incarnation and wonder if any of us alive today will live to see such a dream come true.

The first President of the United States of Africa, who would it be? Probably a Swahili or a non Igbo-speaking Arab ...

In the other realms of international affairs, especially when it comes to the Middle East (Israel and the Pals) which many see as a religious issue, I suppose that Nigeria is maybe, evenly divided, population-wise, as evenly divided as the North is from the South, the East from the West.

Despite generally subscribing to the notion of "all men are created equal" Christianity of course does not want to be "unequally yoked" to al-Islam, not even through marriage. I have no illusions about where His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, His Holiness the Emir of Kano and Muhammadu Buhari the commander-in-chief and President of Nigeria stand on such issues, just as I had no illusions about reliable child of Zion, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan 's stand on such issues.

In Israel, thank heaven still a democratic society where people are free to think and to speak, there are all sorts of people saying this and all sorts of people still saying saying that. On the one hand people like the one known as "Arafat's Rabbi" Yisroel Dovid Weiss and the Satmar people and all the other dedicated Jewish religionists opposed to Zionism it is not a criminal offence, they are still free to speak their mind without any fear of being beheaded by some Caliph's sword , are free to speak, consistent with the idea that "where there are two Jews there are three opinions", but mindful that in today's Israel proper , the so called " anti-Zionist Jews" are vastly and almost invisibly in the minority.

I bother to write about this because I was aghast reading this statement issued by Eidah HaChareidis, denouncing as it were the very IDF that liberated their holy city quarters during the Six Day War , the very IDF which is currently keeping them safe and that has in fact made it possible to be keeping their Sabbaths in Mea Shearim in spite of which the statement contains this sentence, "We say in our prayers, "Due to our sins we were exiled from our land" and only through the messiah will we be redeemed, not by military force "

On the other hand Rabbi Ovadia Yosef did say that "Those who perished in the Holocaust were reincarnated sinners"

On Wednesday I betook myself to the ABF-Huset on Sveavagen to listen to Magnus Hellgren Sweden's Ambassador to Israel report on the current situation in Israel in the wake of the recent conflict along the Israel-Gaza border and the New Israel Nationality Law which defines Israel as a Jewish State and intends to uphold the Jewish character of the Jewish state.

On Monday, I shall seek permission from the arrangers of that event, the Wahat al Salam , to share what was said at that meeting, because all of what was said , including the questions and answers are important to our understanding, including an understanding of our own prejudices in understanding the current situation

Hopefully, the world, including world Jewry is familiar with Rabbi Meir Kahane and his seminal book, Our Challenge : The Chosen Land – when I first read it about some twenty years ago, I thought it was both forward-looking and inspiring. This latest legislation is not far removed from much of what was said in that book...

A very balanced account of the whole phenomenon : Dan Cohn-Sherbok : Zionism

Above all, whatever our biases or our understanding, we should - as the Torah exhorts those to whom it is addressed: Seek peace and pursue it

Interesting : Rabbi Alon Anava : the journey of the soul

A very balance account of the whole phenomenon : Dan Cohn-Sherbok : Zionism

Above all, whatever our biases or our understanding, we should - as the Torah exhorts those to whom it is addressed: Seek peace and pursue it

Interesting : Rabbi Alon Anava : the journey of the soul
