Dear Honoured Guest,
Invitation to attend the Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation Conference on "Transforming Ivory Towers to Ebony Towers: Lessons for South Africa's Curriculum Transformation in the Humanities from Africa and African-American Studies", Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 August 2018, University of Johannesburg, South Africa.
On behalf of the University of Johannesburg's (UJ) Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC), South Africa, we would like to invite you to a two-day conference scheduled to take place on Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 August 2018, at the University of Johannesburg.
Prominent South African, African, and African-American scholars have been invited to present papers over the two days on carefully selected topics around four broad themes: The Challenges of Transforming the South African Higher Education Sector; Key Issues in Transforming South Africa's Higher Education Sector; Lessons from Africa; and Lessons From African-American Studies. This conference seeks to draw on lessons from six African countries – Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and Senegal – as well as from Africana and African-American Studies in the United States (US) in an effort to contribute to scholarship and policies on transforming South Africa's curriculum in the field of humanities. This project is explicitly inter-disciplinary on the premise that transformation debates and processes are simply too important to be left to educationists, and must have buy-in across different disciplines in the humanities from subjects such as political science, history, economics, sociology, and literature, if they are to be embedded in South Africa's curricula.
This conference will be open to students, faculty members, and other university staff in Gauteng province and beyond, as well as civil society, members of the general public, government officials, and diplomats. The Gauteng-based Pan-African media will also be invited to cover the event. The conference will further be filmed so that all or part of it can be used as teaching aids at universities and schools in South Africa, Africa, and the US.
We would be most grateful if you could kindly make time to attend this important conference. Please find attached the concept paper for the conference as well as the agenda (pasted below and attached). For further information, please contact Dr. Dawn Nagar, IPATC Research Coordinator at dawnn@uj.ac.za; Ms. Kathy Majoor, Administrative Officer at kmajoor@uj.ac.za; and Ms. Cecilia Nedziwe-Moyo, Research Coordinator at IPATC, at cmoyo@uj.ac.za; or via telephone at +27 11 5597230.
I thank you very much, and look forward to your attendance at this important conference.
Yours Sincerely,
Adekeye Adebajo
