During the last few months, Alassane Ouattara has descended from being a hero to zero. So what is behind his new move to free eight hundred political prisoners, including the genocidist Simone Gbagbo?
Option A
He wants to cover his tracks and give the impression that he is now a true believer in reconciliation in the post -war era
in order to patch up his very dirty record in terms of imprisonment of opponents and the illegal arrest of a lot of folks.
In this way he can make up lost ground in the battle for public opinion, and still aim for a controversial third term.
Option B
Given the gradual build up of hostility against him and his loss of support in the north and the west of the country,
his former supporters - and given the animosity that has built up against his highhandedness by his former allies such as Konan Bedie and even Guillaume Soro- he decided to throw in the towel and head for the exit.
Option C
He has given into pressure from the European Union, that recently made some negative comments about his regime. The EU, fearful of a ton of migrants flooding their shores in the event of another war, might have given him a strong warning- but this is yet to be proven.
Whatever the case, Alassane Ouattara, and his corrupt regime is a disappointment to many. He is not as cruel as the fake pan-Africanist cum genocidist, Laurent Gbagbo, and his lieutenants, but those who hoped for a clean, rule-based, caring and non-corrupt regime - free from nepotism and kleptomania, did not get their wish.
