I would be careful to use the right terminology. I tend to say "identification marks" instead of tribal marks but I am still searching for a better term.
It is a form of surgery so facial surgery may be a candidate. Facial scarification
may be another possibility although when I looked up the term I realized that it is
often associated with artwork these days.
Colonial anthropologists often used terms to devalue rather than to uplift.
