Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Oyibo in Igbo Thought

Gloria and Obododinma,
My attention was caught by your binary – black or white angel (or demon). From what I saw in some parts of the bible, it is neither white nor black. I do not know where the binary may have emerged from. Look at these – bold in parenthesis are mine:
Daniel 7:9  I beheld till thrones were placed, and one that was ancient of days did sit: his raiment was white as snow (this is not oyibo colour but natural colour of an animal or plant wool), and the hair of his head like pure wool (am not sure which tribe has this hair) his throne was fiery flames (am also not sure if Queen's throne is like this)and the wheels thereof burning fire.
Dan 7:10  A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousands of thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.
Revelation 1:10  I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet
Rev 1:13  and in the midst of the candlesticks one like unto a son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about at the breasts with a golden girdle.
Rev 1:14  And his head and his hair were white as white wool (am not sure which tribe has this hair)white as snow (not sure oyibo hair is like that); and his eyes were as a flame of fire (this is neither blue nor black eye);
Rev 1:15  and his feet like unto burnished brass (not black or white feet), as if it had been refined in a furnace; and his voice as the voice of many waters (neither while or black tone and the furnace is not white colour).
Rev 1:17  And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as one dead – (the total deviation from the prevailing white description may have caused both Daniel and John to faint).

Thanks.
First, this is NOT about the identification of entities as either White or Black. I leave the question of whether God aligns with forms in this galaxy to theologians!

Second, Igbo thought is not polarized. One can't just mire the discourse on the faith of Christians and others.

Of course, there may be other issues about how oyibo is configured in Igbo or any other thought. This would be highly welcome.
Sincerely,
Obododimma.

Illuminating analysis.Thank you.

How much of the Oyibo -as- deity concept do you relate to Christian missionary propaganda and the god- is-White syndrome?Would the people discussed, accept Black angels in their spiritual universe, or would these be seen as demons? This, for me, is the litmus test. Needless to say that Islam does not condone representation of spiritual entities,  as far as I know.

Any differences between the Christians and others,  in the Oyibo -as - deity concept?I assume that there is also an urban- rural divide.

These are some of the questions that came to mind. I noticed that there was no reference, direct or indirect, to religion and its impact on perceptions.

This weekend, I continue looking for trouble (since it also looks for
me!) by examining the figure of the "oyibo" in Igbo discourse. I won't
say more. If have time to spare for this kind of exploration, click on
