Dear All,

I hope you are all well. The JIWS is doing so well (we are now up to 1,099,526 downloads!).

I'm writing because I started a fundraiser for the amazing Dr. Nawal El Saadawi whom I had invited to be a keynote speaker at the World Conference on Women's Studies, this year in Bangkok, for which I serve a conference chair. For those of you who don't know who she is, Nawal is a writer, first woman physician of Egypt and psychiatrist who has advocated for the rights of girls and women through her bold, liberatory writings; her books have in the past been banned by the Egyptian gov and she has been imprisoned. She is the "Simone de Beauvoir" of Egypt and an incredible voice for freedom everywhere. Nawal (whom I can't believe I'm on a first name basis with, as she has been a huge influence on me!) now in her late 80s is ill, having suffered a minor stroke after undergoing eye surgery where an incorrect lens was put into her eye. She is unable to travel to the conference, but, because her earnings (and those of her children) have been limited by the Egyptian government, she is struggling at this late stage of her life.  Last year I met her translator, confidante and adopted daughter in Colombo, Sri Lanka, (Omnia Amin) and together we started a GoFundMe campaign to assist her in her hospital bills and post-hospital recovery care. We are up to $9,500 of our 20K goal! Unfortunately, there was a brief setback when some Fundamentalists created a false "official twitter" account for Nawal and started to spread rumors that the fundraiser was not authorized by her. This seems to have quieted down but I have received inquiries from HuffPost Morocco and from others who were concerned the fundraiser is a hoax. It's not.

I would be most grateful if you would circulate the link with your networks, and if you are able to make a donation on her behalf. Here is the link to the campaign with thanks.
