Oro Agba - For Pius Adesanmi
Agogo ide pealing kango kango kango kango
agidigbo ilu thumping dugbe dugbe dugbe
the rumble, the peal, the clap of thunder
that pierces the cacophony of the wind
"I'll not be muffled by a torrent of a thousand noisy darts of the rain"
ohaha the indefatigable crier.
the hounds could hunt ohaha, alasotan
the trappers could stalk him
Rain might conspire with thunder
to drown alasoye's voice in noise
their serenity ohaha's cry pierced; our complacency her wails disturbed
angry, how they growl and roar; fanged rulers of the dark;
kite, brazen thief that steals the chick in daylight,
yapping, yelping, hyena, hissing tiger;
their dark still of the night disturbed
scared their game be not scared alert
rage all you care, Olohunkere would chirp
boil all you dare, the rock would not dissolve
iboosio, help!, iboooosio!
egbawa o ara-adugbo the crying voice of the junior wife
"our mad husband is setting fire to the house!"
did I doze away, did I fall asleep? waxen deaf of hearing?
but ohaha does not sleep
his cry you hear; his laugh each fall of the night
Orogodogain. tell us what happened
Send word back home from your journey
emissary of Orunmila; did he recall you for a report?
Will you bear to us his staff again; or show up in egungun disguise?
Oro-agba, please dont report us yet to Shango
Oro godogain, dont take our case yet to Ogun!
Osupa wonun orun lo! come back! Please. you have our ears!
whether they would listen; whether we would hear
whether we would discern, or stumble on in the woods
"crack open the gourd of mystery, its contents spread in the air";
the seed you sowed of Orumila's word sprouted shoots
the message, the fruit of wisdom hangs ripe for all to pluck.
And yesterday, as the fiery day merged into evening and evening into night
was it in dream - but sure the cry I heard
the laugh as ever clear as in previous nights
The ohaha was back on his perch crying and laughing away
Though it thundered, he waited out the peals and cried out his laugh fresh and louder still.
