Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Racism or Classism?

Great article. Reading this article reminds me of couple of books I read in the past. Ngugi's Decolonizing the mind and Wizard of the Crow which both focus on postcolonial era in Africa. "The oppressed become the oppressors". I am going to borrow the term "post traumatic slave syndrome" from Dr. DeGruy Leary. Africans may be suffering from our own postcolonial traumatic syndrome. After independence of African countries, African leaders and those in academia who criticized the colonial system failed to recognize the power of colonial supremacy. The most powerful form of enslavement is mental enslavement. This type of enslavement comes in different form from religious trauma of Christianity of white Jesus to educational systems that has been the same since colonial era. The belief that the white man came to Africa to open our eyes to modernity has never changed.

Thanks for sharing.

Here is a link to my essay titled, "Racism or Classism? Africa's Hidden Race Problem," which was just published by The Republic.

Falola, Kwabena, and Edward Kissi on this list will see direct or indirect references to them or their works. I even cited one anecdote shared on this list. I particularly thank Edward Kissi for enlightening me on the multiple semiotics of Oburoni in Ghana.
