USA Africa Dialogue Series - Nigerians Take Stock of Lives Lost to the Murderers as Govt Aided Fulani Herdsmen Terrorism Continues Unabated

Mbe Nwaniga  [ on Facebook]

Confirmed herdsmen killing in Enugu state in the past 7 years:

In June 2012 at Nimbo,Uzo Uwani LGA.

1.Thaddeus Utazi, 17
2.Michael Okeh, 19

In November 2015 at Abbi,Uzo Uwani LGA

3.Fidelis Okeja, 45
4.Mercy, Okeja, 50

In April 2016 at Nimbo,Uzo Uwani LGA

12 were killed on 25 April 2016 .

9 of the 12 were buried on 17 June 2016 while 3 others were buried earlier. This is the highest mass killing or violent death in one location in the whole of Enugu state since the end of the Biafran war in 1970.

In my estimate, herdsmen have killed 16 people in Enugu state in the past 7 years and all the deaths were recorded in Uzo Uwani LGA. Please add any other confirmed herdsmen killing you know.More people have been killed in Uzo Uwani LGA by herdsmen than the total number of people killed by other means since 1970.

5 herdsmen were arrested in Kogi state in May 2016 in connection with the Nimbo killings. They have been awaiting trial at Nsukka prison since then.

Some people want to ask Enugu state government why this 5 suspects have not been tried in court and what the state is doing to stop further herdsmen killings.

A judicial commission of inquiry headed by Hon Justice Chukwuma Ene JSC was also set up to look into the Nimbo killings. They submitted their report to the governor in December 2016.Why was this report not made public?

    • Hyginus Igbonekwu
Hyginus Igbonekwu How sure are we that investigations are ongoing as it concerns this?
After his assassination, it's confirmed that herdsmen has being unleashing several attacks on the people of the community. As we speak, militaries are deployed to this area but that never made them( herdsmen) to stop their attacks. I start to blv these people are on annihilation agenda.
    • Mbe Nwaniga
Mbe Nwaniga Hyginus Igbonekwu herdsmen have not attacked Adaba yet,to the best of my knowledge.

      When did they attack?
    • Reuben Okonkwo
Reuben Okonkwo The day he was assassinated, he refused to receive money from fulani Herdsmen during the peace meeting between the community and herdsman,
He said that he must report to his principal (governor )because he was assigned to check the damage caused by herdsmen in Adaba and umulokpa communities
    • Mbe Nwaniga

Mbe Nwaniga What is Adaba or Uzo Uwani doing about this?Who allowed herdsmen there? Will the communities team up to drive the herdsmen away or do they want external help?I asked them this question in 2016 and they said they are ready. How come herdsmen are back there and you are relying on soldiers to defend Uzo Uwani? The same soldiers fleeing from Boko Haram. None of them know the terrain.
    • Reuben Okonkwo
Reuben Okonkwo Mbe Nwaniga some Adaba community cabal are the group of people that invited fulanis herdsman, they're still giving them information about the meeting and movement of the people who opposed them
    • Hyginus Igbonekwu
Hyginus Igbonekwu Reuben Okonkwo based on who allowed them; most times I blv these terrorists has proven to not knowing boundaries when it comes to agrarians but if as stated community cabals are involved I think they should be brought to book to end this herdsmen hostility.
    • Hyginus Igbonekwu
Hyginus Igbonekwu Mbe Nwaniga I blv no one folds his hands into captivity. Communal efforts are always felt when cases like these evolves. To ameliorate this situation intersectional collaborations are needed this time. The sufferings of the peoples of these areas should be looked into.

    • Kelechi Onu
Kelechi Onu Seriously Uzo Uwani needs to apply both conventional and non conventional method to wage the war against these blood suckers. Like someone stated they can't attack Ogurugu or Igga, other communities should make enquiries how Ogurugu people were able to tame them
    • Ichie Mmaduaburochukwu Tony Frank
Ichie Mmaduaburochukwu Tony Frank Kelechi onu this is not a task for Uzo Uwani alone it is for the whole of Enugu state, if they succeed in subdueing Uzo Uwani, they will come over to Nsukka. In Anambra, Ayamelum people successfully pushed them down to Uzo Uwani, they camped there and where launching attacks from Uzo Uwani. In 2012 when they killed a man in his farm at Omasi Agu, they fled to Adani when the Anambra vigilante service Ayamelum section got the information, they rushed to Their Sariki at Adani the Fulanis with him all ran away but one of the palace guard wanted to stop them from arresting the Sariki, they cut off one of his hand and took them to Anaku . The bottom line of my story is that Anambra people didn't take it that it was Omasi Agu people's problem, they saw it as a problem of the state.
    • Mbe Nwaniga
Mbe Nwaniga Thank you Fronse Monse. The level of parochialism in Nsukka and Enugu state is shocking. It is now Uzo Uwani problem and not the problem of all of us.That is how the Igalla conquered the whole place in the early 19th century. They attacked one community after another while the communities never came together to fight them.At the same time the machete wielding single community fighters was never strong enough to withstand the Igala archers with bows and arrows. That same parochialism is killing the youths of today.
    • Kelechi Onu
Kelechi Onu Ichie Mmaduaburochukwu Tony Frank

You mentioned that Ayamelum people successfully pushed them to Uzo Uwani. I didn't see where the whole Anambra came together to push them out. If Nimbo people can't summon courage how can help come their way.

They attacked Ogurugu they were repelled, they attacked Ukutu they chased them out successfully. Let Nimbo people put up a fight against them first then help will come their way.

You also mentioned vigilante and I ask is vigilante established by the villages and equipped without government backing?

How is the parochialism of the youths stopped the government or the older generation from being proactive or the youths should chase the Fulani herdsmen with hands?

      I don't understand
    • Ichie Mmaduaburochukwu Tony Frank
Ichie Mmaduaburochukwu Tony Frank Onu what didn't you understand here, Ayamelum is a local government comprising of many local communities just like Uzo Uwani if Ayamelum people said ooh it is Omasoi Agu people's problem, Fulanis would have subdued and they will go over to the next community but they capitalized on the principle of "ayili n'igwe aya amaro onye ike gwulu" coming to the vigilante, going from Adani to Nsukka, you will see checking points mounted on the road by vigilantee, do those vigilantee not have government backing?

  • Louis Danielson
Louis Danielson Mbe Nwaniga, thanks for the wonderful and systematic job you are doing in galvanising and mobilising the Igbos, especially the youth, to form a vanguard against external aggression by some uncircumcised and barbaric marauders who on the first look, may seem ignorant of their devilish mission, but are consciously carrying out the commandments of their long gone generalismo; Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, whose quest had always been to hoist a flag in the Atlantic Ocean.
My take on this is that we need to mobilise and systematically train a secret militia with the mandate to defend the Igboland against any form of external aggression.
This is because it has been proven that the security apparati we have in the country are only oriented to protect the elite.
We have a right and duty to protect the Igboland land against total annihilation and extinction, especially in the hands of some savage invaders.
