Dear friends:
Sorry I have to be the bearer of sad news, but I have just learned that my friend and author, Robert Papstein has passed away recently, on March 6, at his home in the French Alps. This was a shock to all of us, but particularly to his family, partner and many to his colleagues and friends.
I had visited with Robert several times this past summer, and celebrated with him the publication of his latest book, Eritrean Journey (Hdri) with whom I have worked form its conception to publication.
Robert was a great friend of the Eritrean People, and he has been a supporter of the Eritrean revolution from the early '80s on. He traveled extensively in the Eritrean battle fields photographing with a special focus on Eritrean women combatants and children that resulted in our publication, Eritrea Revolution at Dusk.
A scholar and an activist who spent his early post graduate days in Zambia, Malawi and all over Southern Africa. Robert visited post liberation Eritrea several times and briefly resided there in the early '90s. In one of our walks in Asmara, he had told me that he wanted to settle in Eritrea permanently until the war intervened. His post liberation visits to Eritrea resulted in his book, Eritrea A Tourist Guide.
Robert will be missed much. He was a gregarious and optimistic person. He was a loyal friend, a caring son who with his sister Susan tended to the care of his elderly mother in the Princeton area for several years, and had found true love in the last few years.
Farewell my friend. Use your love of Photography to good use.
