Subject: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Obituary: Professor Alex Amtaika
This is painful for me to write, a stab on my emotions. We lost Alex and his daughter, Wala, to a serious car accident. Those copied here know him for his wonderful organizing of TOFAC in Durban. He edited three volumes from the conference. He attended the Africa conference in Austin a few times, and his leadership role benefitted many of us.
A wonderful man, he was more of a friend than a colleague. He once drove 500 miles just to see me in Pretoria for one hour. When I asked him why—he said "the desire to see whom we love and admire make it worthwhile." In the first week of March this year, I discouraged him from driving from driving the long distance from Rhodes University, Grahamstown, to see me in Bloemfontein. I did not know that this would have been the last time to see him.
This is a pain that will endure in the body and mind, too hard to bear. Consolation is difficult to make.
2 Corinthians 5:6-8
So we are always of good courage.
We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.
Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Both father and daughter will be laid to rest on
