Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Georgetown votes yes/reparations

Prof.,

Your daughter is probably giving more than $27 to her alma mater annually, mine keep chasing me to give more and more. But I agree with you, a donation is different from compulsive free speech. A student may be supported by right wing organizations to pay lawyers huge sums to challenge this reparations vote to the Supreme Court and the verdict is likely that you cannot compel people to make statements that they do not agree with. That is why reparations are not subject to a referendum but to executive action of the sort offered by Glasgow University recently. The university administration may authorize donations to a reparations fund and it may receive big gifts from alumni. The government can authorize reparations and it does not matter what red neck individuals think about it because the government has the power to appropriate funds for such purposes. For example, when President Yaradua appropriated funds for the amnesty for Niger Delta militants, it was not subject to a plebiscite. If the federal government decides today to appropriate funds for fair Igbo reparations, some individuals may protest all they want but the executive presidency is well within its rights to appropriate such funds for the purpose of a more humane union for the benefit of all.

We have to start somewhere, Michael.
This also sends a message to all students, the elite of tomorrow Black and White,  that they are walking on
the  dead bodies of enslaved Africans, so to speak, in these fine institutions.

I would prefer that money to be paid by the administration but the payment to the direct descendants is a worthy cause, even along Black  and White class lines.

Thanks for the explanation, Biko. I'm glad, though, that my daughter has left Georgetown many years back; otherwise I would be among those on the protest line if the University ever approved such tuition hike. I doubt if Georgetown will approve it, anyway; but anything is possible these days.

When countries pay reparations, some of those who may be paid will be among the tax-payers but that is no double jeopardy. The reparations funds could have been diverted to other goals if there were no reparations but people of African descent would continue paying taxes anyway. And the entire society will benefit from reparations, not only people of African descent, given that the healing of the wounds may contribute to a better society for all.

So, would students of African descent be excluded from the tuition hike? If not, wouldn't that amount to a double jeopardy?

Just curious!

Students of Georgetown Univ. will now contribute to a reparations fund through a tuition hike but some argue that it is the university that should be paying.

This is an important move, in any case.
