The Nigerian Supreme Court on Friday, 24 May 2019, awarded to the PDP the February and March 2019 election results in Zamfara, for the National Assembly, House of Assembly and the Governorship. The Supreme Court premised its decision on alleged lack of proper primary elections by the APC in the State. It is remarkable that the Supreme Court failed to disqualify the APC from fielding candidates in Zamfara for the 2019 federal elections, despite the fact that an appeal against the disqualification of the party by the Appeal Court was pending with it. The election in Zamfara results showed that APC candidates won both national assembly, house of assembly and gubernatorial elections in the State. According to the decision of the Supreme Court, the APC Gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Idris Mukhtar, who won the election with 534,541 votes is now declared unelected in favour of the PDP candidate Dr. Bello Muhammad Mutawalle, who won 189,452 votes. What kind of law permits the Supreme Court of Nigeria to disenfranchise 534,541 people of Zamfara? Would it not have been intelligent to nullify the whole election in the State and hold a new one? What will Supreme Court do if the 534,541 should pour into the streets of Zamfara to protest violently against their being disenfranchised? By its belated decision, the Supreme Court is stoking fire in Zamfara.
