Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Seeking Clarification on the Nigerian Civil War : Date of Capture of Bonny and Reasons for Southern Entry into the War agst Biafra

Toyin,

When I say you are intellectually lazy, people think that I do not like you.  Instead of you to do some reading, you will start a collage of the works of other hard working people and try to present them here as if you are doing some worthy academic work.  To add salt upon injury, you coin some grandiose title, in the hope that you will trick unwary observers.  Let me not talk about your praise singing.

The Nigerian Civil War by John St. de Jorre written during and published shortly after the war is authoritative and will give you dates, names and times that places fell.

In case of anybody mobilizing against anybody, you must go and read the history of Nigeria from 1945 to 1965.  The end of the second world war signaled the end of colonialism and the outgoing British orchestrated a political process and influenced the internal rivalries between individuals and ethnicities.  There are no easy answers but nobody mobilized against anybody initially but everybody were influenced by recent rivalries and animosities to take a stand.  Wole Soyinka went to visit Ojukwu.  Awolowo went to visit Ojukwu and so many other people tried to avert a full scale war.  After Awolowo's meeting of western leaders of thought in Ibadan, the Yoruba were going to be neutral.  This was a fall out of the 1959 Ahmadu Bello NPC/Zik NCNC coalition against Awolowo's AG - Action Group!  True the invasion of Mid West changed all that.

Now go and read up on the subject:

Cheers.

AN ENGLISH NURSERY RHYME

The law locks up the man or woman

Who steals the goose from off the common

But leaves the greater villain loose

Who steals the common from off the goose

The law demands that we atone

When we take things that we do not own

But leaves the lords and ladies fine

Who take things that are yours and mine

The poor and wretched don't escape

If they conspire the law to break

This must be so but they endure

Those who conspire to make the law

The law locks up the man or woman

Who steals the goose from off the common

And geese will still a common lack

Till they go and steal it back

I would like to have help on these subjects relating to the Nigerian Civil War.

Some sources present the capture of Bonny by Benjamin Adekunle's 3rd Marine Commandos as in June 1967 others in June 1968.

I'm puzzled bcs I did not understand the Nigerian side had mobilized sufficiently by mid 1967 to launch such an assault nor did I understand 3rd Marine Commandos to have been formed at that time.

I had thought the Nigerian side's first decisive mobilization was in the defeat of Banjo's forces at Ore much later in the year, breaking the Biafran Midwest occupation and the planned occupation of Ibadan and Lagos.

In relation to the sequence of the war, I am curious as to why the SW, and other parts of the South eventually joined in the war agst Biafra.

I had thought the Biafran occupation of the Midwest and the attempted occupation of the SW was what mobilized these peoples agst Biafra but a school of thought holds that the whole of Nigeria was  already mobilized agst Biafra before the Midwest occupation.
