Does anyone think that the present situation in Nigeria is sustainable?

There was a time in history when I and you could not have ventured into America or Europe except we had volunteered to be enslaved. There was a time in history when the black person was counted as a fraction of a human being for the purpose of taxation and representation, in the build up to the American Constitution. of 1787. There were the Martin Luther Kings who paid the ultimate price in the fight for common sense to prevail. Your elite now rush to America, UK, Canada, Germany, France-even to brush their teeth and repair their phones. You are now probably in one of these nations as a professor in some distinguished university. There were once serious issues in these great nations, resolved and still being resolved. With men and women of goodwill, Nigeria can be one of the great nations of the world.where its peoples can live and work together in peace.

all these reasonable ideas did not help the people of the middle belt whose land has been overrun by Fulani terrorists after massacring and displacing the people.

why cant these ranches be localized to the Muslim North?

Southerners are not interested in the vaunted economic opportunities of  ranches initiated in the name of accommodating Fulani herdsmen.

advocating for ranches that have nothing to do with Fulani herdsmen is not the same as claiming that Fulani herdsmen, in whatever no,  will be part of the equation.

the level of carnage this group has caused across the nation, amplified by the bloodthirsty impunity of their pressure group Miyetti Allah and the machinations of the Buhari govt who scrambles to accommodate them while never bringing the terrorists to book, means Southern Nigerians are having none of any such plan.

Still on time for the thinking cap

 July 22, 2019

There are millions of Nigerians roaming the streets, not knowing what to do with their lives. They have had governments that were confused about how to better the sad situation they are in. With abject poverty and purposelessness of leadership so glaring to the rest of the world, not many will blame the United States' President, Donald Trump, for heaping derogatory remarks on our very essence as creations of God.

Nigeria is more endowed than most nations of the world. It would have been more like heaven on earth if what we have in our nation were to reside in the territories of a more purposeful people. Nigeria has no business being categorised as a poor nation, were our destiny to have been in the hands of patriotic and intelligent leaders.

Sadly, our nation is today enmeshed in a variety of serious security challenges. One is that between herdsmen and farmers which is avoidable. Clashes between the so-called Fulani herdsmen and farmers have claimed so many lives in some regions of the federation. It is not as if there are no possible solutions.

One possible solution in the affected states or regions is to decide against cattle rearing in their territory. The problem here is that the constitutional right of the individual to do legitimate business in a Nigerian territory could have been infringed. However, the recommended and civilised alternative would be to accommodate their cows in a ranch or whatever name you may choose to call it.

Sadly, this plausible solution has been visited with some kind of propaganda. This propaganda or misinformation has intruded the thinking of many. The failure of proponents to educate or enlighten the public about such a proposal has not, in any way, helped matters The fear among the Yoruba, in particular, is that releasing their land for settling cows could, inadvertently, lead to extending the influence of the Fulani to the territory of the Yoruba, with the consequence that their cherished culture could be eroded. The history of Fulani expansionist adventures is cited to back up this suspicion. The current Nigerian leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, is Fulani and perceived as a Jihadist by his critics.

In my candid opinion or assumption, any state or group of states that have established a ranch do so for the benefit of their own people. The bulk of the work force will come from where such a ranch is established, even when expertise in some aspects of cattle rearing could come from elsewhere. If what we want to build is a nation, there should be no reason why Nigerians of diverse backgrounds cannot be encouraged to work together.

The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, may have debunked the "fulanisation" theory by a decision to establish a world-class ranch in his state. The Hausa-Fulani have resided among the Yoruba for decades; they reside in Sabo-Gari areas of most towns and cities. One does not succumb to the propaganda that establishing a couple of ranches in the land of the Yoruba, if done with honest intentions, can lead to the domination of the indigenous people by the Fulani.

Ranching of livestock will take thousands of our people out of unemployment. There is more to cattle rearing than what the majority assume. People will be employed to feed, graze, herd, castrate and weigh them. There would be those to operate milking machines and maintain housing areas for the animals. Other duties may include administering medications to the animals as well as checking for diseases and injuries. There will be work for clerical staff and accountants. There could be share holders and local farmers who would want to grow grass as feed for the animals. There are many useful products that could be derived from ranching, the taking away of animals from the streets.

We would avert looming dangers by being reasonable and purposeful. For those who would rather prefer the break-up of Nigeria via the escalation of current crises, my warning is that the death of Nigeria cannot be a happy one. There would be those who would wish they were never born, never brought children into this world. The West Africa sub-region would wish they were very distant neighbours, as the rest of the world is confronted with the nuisance of unwanted refugees. I would rather agree with Dr. Maurice Femi Oladimeji who spent quality time telling me, all the way from Nigeria, how the diversity of our nation has been its strength. Of course, I will also side with the energetic Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who has been warning whoever cared to listen of the dangers of war.
