Conference Abstract The Liberian Studies Association (LSA) invites abstracts for presentations, panels, and roundtables that examine scholarship related to the conference's theme of "The Functional State: Historical Lessons, Current Best Practices and Future Paths." Creating structures and favorable conditions that lead to the construction of a functional state requires comprehensive political commitment and effective institutions of governance that guarantee citizens active political participation, and access to the resources that improve their wellbeing and socioeconomic independence. Liberia has acknowledged the importance of a functional state to this development and stability. Questions abound, however, about whether the operation of the Liberian state is reflective of the country's stated pursuit of the establishment of a functional state. The Liberian Studies Association (LSA) welcomes proposals for papers, panels and/or roundtables from various disciplinary and research traditions focusing on questions and topics related to Liberia's strive to construct a functional state for its 52nd annual conference scheduled to take place on April 23-25, 2020 at Cornell University. Sub-themes include: History and Lessons Learnt Arts, Culture and Development Civil Society Education, Brain Drain and Development Health, Inequality and Well-Being Reconciliation and Justice Youth and Social Change Environment Security Access to Justice Financial Inclusion Gender Call for Papers and Guidelines for Submitting Roundtable Panel Proposals: The Liberian Studies Association invites panels, roundtables and papers that critically examine scholarship on all factors that address the theme of the conference.
