Today, Nimi will do the celebration of life for his mom at Abonnema. I thought I could be there, an hour's flight from where I am now, but our dear Africa is not like that! I wanted to be there, and I promised him. To get to Lagos from Banjul, I had to stop in Monrovia, Accra, and Lome, and then catch a flight, 20 minutes, to Lagos. A flight of 3 hours became 12 hours! To go to Mali from Lagos, it is a whole day, if not two, part of which includes taking a ferry! To go to Yaounde from Lagos, you must first of all travel westwards to connect Eastwards.
So, I could get to Port-Harcourt, but for any who has been there before, from one point to another in that city is one hour. And as I realized, if I could get to Port-Harcourt from Yaounde through Abuja, getting back must begin in the afternoon of Sunday, sleeping in a hotel, and commencing the journey on Monday. The road option that used to protect us is no longer reliable---bad roads, police harassment, and kidnappers.
Nimi's Mom will deliver our message to Angels in Heaven to look upon us with mercy. A mother's prayer always gets to God's attention fast.
Pray for us, Mama, for God to make us like Nimi, a most brilliant scholar, a passionate son of God.
Sleep well, the Mama who produced the mind of a Nobel Laureate.
