The whole judicial system does that and not the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court upholds a verdict of the lower courts based on their experience of how they would have ruled if they were faced with the same evidence.

If new compelling evidence is found either by the counsel of the loser of the case or by the prosecuting police due to confession of a criminal who plea bargains to divulge the real identity of the real criminal there are laid down procedures followed by the judicial system in which the real culprit is interrogated and confession obtained and the innocent is set free and the culprit jailed.

As for the election result I am sure the evidence is dicey and judges had to decide one way or another where evidence is not decisive where the cause of justice is served.  Being human they don't always het it right.

My father once told me when I was young they ( lawyers) always knew and agreed among themselves if the ruling of a judge was wrong based on the evidence and arguments presented in court.

Judges also have political loyalties which inform their judgments in contentious cases.  This was why people get edgy in the US when there is vacancy for a federal judge to be filled when political opponents are in power.

In the Bayelsa case the Constitutional requirement as Baba Kadiri stated is for a re-run but the Supreme Court opted to  rule in favour of the opposing PDP governor.  In that case you cannot go beyond the Supreme Court whether the judgement was right or wrong.  This was the similar case in the disputed Tallahassee elections where President George Bush Jeff was governor.  The Democrats felt robbed but could do nothing about it.
