Named after Brenda Lee, a great American singer, Brenda Fassie's mother was a pianist. She took the genes and carried it further, beginning with street singing for coins and ending up, as a star, with the alias, "The Madonna of the Townships." The poor adopted her as a matron-saint. Go to the Bassline in J'burg and you will see a life size bronze sculpture of this genius. PhD dissertations have been written on her, and a major book. A documentary was delayed because of controversies over her estate.
