In 1976, the album for the hit Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Jesus Christ Superstar was banned in South Africa. The album was considered "undesirable," and it was illegal to import or even play the album, upon punishment of being "put in cold storage." Today, while the music is no longer prohibited from being performed in the country, there are many South African Christian groups that still protest against the work.
