Fasting is not limited to food and water avoidance. The discipline applies to your tongue. You can deny yourself of food, but your blessings are gone if you eat the flesh of another person. To eat the flesh is to talk bad about another person, to say things that are false about others, to make fun of people. The punishment is very severe.
In Surah Al-Hamzah, verse 1: "Woe to every scorner and mocker". [104:1]
In Surah Al-Isra, verse 36: "And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [ones] will be questioned". [17:36]
While not putting it in form of the Ten Commandments as we have it in the Old Testament in the Bible, Prophet Mohammad ("Peace be to you, O Messenger of God, with God's mercy and blessings") was very clear in his statements:
- Do not ignore one another;
- Do not envy one another;
- Beware of suspicion, the evil of false tales;
- Do not spy on one another;
- Do not shun one another;
- Do not look for other's faults;
- Do not be jealous of one another;
- Do not hate one another, and
Be brothers!
As you pray, avoid backbiting
