In 1988, Eddy Grant released the antiapartheid song "Gimme Hope Jo'anna," which was subsequently banned by the South African government. Despite this ban, however, the song continued to play throughout South Africa. "Jo'anna" is in reference to Johannesburg, South Africa. Also, in the lyrics, "the Archbishop who's a peaceful man" refers to Desmond Tutu, who had received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his condemnation of apartheid.
