USA Africa Dialogue Series - IFJP Call for Editors

International Feminist Journal of Politics: Call for New Editors 2022-2025 Term

The International Feminist Journal of Politics seeks applications from teams of scholars interested in taking up co-editorship roles on the journal from January 1, 2022 for a four-year term (2022-2025). IFJP, which was launched in 1999, publishes original scholarship engaging with topics at the intersections of politics, international relations, feminist theory, decolonial studies, and queer theory. The journal is currently edited by a team of four co-Editors-in-Chief, two Conversations editors, two Book Review Editors, Associate Editors, Editorial Board, and International Advisory Council.

Past IFJP teams have been made up of three or four editors from different continents and who bring different theoretical and substantive strengths to journal editing. Applications for the co-Editors-in-Chief are required to have at least one member in/from the Global South.

One of the new co-editors will be expected to fill the role of Managing Editor. The Managing Editor is the primary interface with the Publisher. This is usually done through institutional support from an editor's institution in the form of a graduate student or professional editor. In the current arrangement the professional editor is funded by Cardiff University.

In addition, the publisher, Taylor and Francis, provides the team with annual compensation which can be used at the discretion of the editors but has historically been used variously to support editor travel to professional meetings, host IFJP conferences, pay for the Managing Editor's salary, and compensate external copyeditors who provide more thorough reviews for certain papers at the discretion of the editors.

In the current team, the Managing Editor and Financial Management roles are carried out by separate editors. Historically, they have been done by the same editor. We encourage you to think creatively about how your institutions may support your journal leadership with in-kind and financial support.

Under the current editorial leadership, the IFJP has seen exponential growth in submissions and has increased its issues from four to five per year. Its editorial board features leading feminist scholars from around the world. It publishes articles on a broad range of feminist topics in international studies.

Full team applications are encouraged, but the Conversations and Book Review searches may be filled in a separate call after the board is selected. We encourage you to think about what roles you would expect for each team member and category of team member as you make your proposal.  Differently positioned institutions can provide different kinds of support. Differences in first languages of associate editors and editorial board members as well as differences in variations in geography and in networks of the editors become resources of the journal.

Applications should assemble a team with significant achievements in feminist scholarship, include members of underrepresented or socially marginalized groups, and demonstrate how the team understands and plans to demonstrate the important editorial qualities of a high level of commitment to collaboration, mentoring, feminist publishing, and the best standards of peer-reviewed publishing.

Application packages should include CVs and a statement outlining what individuals will bring to the editing role, particularly in terms of the journal's remit. Applications should also outline any institutional support, including time allowance for journal work and commitments of institutional resources (in kind, financial, labor). It should be noted, however, that the availability of resources will not override considerations of academic excellence and international representation.

Prospective applicants who wish to have informal discussions with the current co-editors are welcome to contact them via email.

Applications may be sent at any time, and the final deadline is November 1, 2020. All applications should be submitted electronically to the International Feminist Journal of Politics (ifjp@cardiff.ac.uk).
