Subject: Nobel Nomination - BLM

Dear friend,

This past year, we huddled to keep safe — and took to the streets to protest injustice. There were few highlights that left us inspired. One of them was the unprecedented mobilization, particularly among young folks, not just for racial equity but for a more vibrant, caring democracy with human dignity at its core.

As we look towards 2021, we have a chance to recognize a few of the people who laid the groundwork for this movement. It is in that spirit that I asked you to join me in nominating Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

By founding the era-defining Black Lives Matter movement and insisting on the humanity of Black folks, they have sparked fights for justice around the world and inspired a fresh recognition of our shared humanity. Thanks to their vision, Black Lives Matter has likely influenced more social engagement that any movement in history.

These women deserve recognition on the highest possible stage. I've had a chance to connect with Alicia and Patrice, who have expressed their willingness to move forward in the process. As academics, you can support this effort by reading and co-signing the nomination letter, attached. Nomination letters are sealed for 50 years and there are no plans to release the letter publicly before then (though you may lobby publicly without penalty). All that is required is that you believe these three remarkable women are worthy of the honor and that you do not mind your names listed as we work to accumulate additional signatures.

The deadline for submission is January 29, 2021. To sign the letter, simply reply to this email indicating your support, as well as how you would like your name and title to appear on the nomination. Moreover, I'm asking you first because I hope you will be willing to spread the word about this effort through your network. If you are interested in doing so, please feel free to edit this email as you see fit and direct your friends and colleagues to this email address. The only requirement is that they are academic scholars. Also happy to provide additional support if that would be helpful.

Regardless, thank you for considering and I pray that the holiday season gifts you with a rest and peace that have eluded us all this year.

Best,
Phil
