A very touching article but somewhat presumptous as to why people do more than one PhD.

It would be helpful to assess examples such as those of Karim Abdul Bangura, whom I understand has various PhDs, all from Western universities.

I was touched by the discussion of perceptions of the differing  value of PhDs and academic positions from different parts of the world and the need to balance this out through exceptional achievement,. defined by publication in top rated, and I expect, Western based journals.

Both true and sad.

When shall the non-West break free of Western cultural and economic determinism?

If Ife and Ibadan were once global centres of learning, how can we do it again?

Then working as an academic in the US, well before the Oxford professorship.

So, I wonder if the assertion that he had to do the Cambridge PhD before he could get the Oxford professorship is accurate.

Adebanwi  also serms to have been significantly published and very visible in his field before getting the Oxford professorship.

His story may be helpful in this analysis but possibly analysed more carefully, in terms of relationships between various factors involving his Western relocation eventually leading to the Oxford professorship.
