Your point about no sane filmmaker from Kannywood wanting to address this topic head on is likely true, though I can think of creative ways that a filmmaker might work around that. It probably helped in this case that the director was from the south; I heard that the main actress from Kannywood (Maryam Booth) was successfully pressured into dropping out of the film. She still won best supporting actress for the film at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Timbuktu by Abderrahmane Sissako is the other feature film I've seen in the last seven years that takes on the issue of insurgency and jihadists in an African country. The cinematography was also spectacular but I didn't find the storyline quite as compelling as this one. I look forward to learning about other films.

let me add some small comments here. lionheart was a decent, but not amazing nollywood film. the terms of its disqualification are absolutely ridiculous. i don't get it. but my heart wasn't broken after i viewed the film

i am sure "terrorists" and armed criminals are widely to be found, but not as i recall with boko haram. those more knowledgeable might identify more. logically such films would emerge from kannywood; and logically any sane person would be afraid to make and show such films.....

Have there been published studies of how the Nigerian film industry has tackled terrorism/Boko Haram over the years?

The Milkmaid is Nigeria's entry this year for Best International Feature at the Oscars (and Nigeria's first successful attempt after the Academy disqualified Genevieve Nnaji's Lionheart for "having too much English dialogue"). It follows a young Nigerian woman's journey in the aftermath of being captured by Boko Haram-style insurgents. The story is well done and the cinematography is outstanding. I realized that it's the first Nigerian film I've seen that takes on this issue but there are probably others that I've missed.
