Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - When Mary was Black

Great article but I have a problem
with "Nigra sum sed formosa."
That is the statement on the last image of the article. It is an apology, that means I am beautiful even though Black. That is a convoluted compliment. It invokes exceptionalism in this instance, and implies that Black people are not usually beautiful. The word "sed"is crucial here, and is not ambiguous. It means "but" not butt.

The above is the equivalent of "you are different never mind you are Black." The naive take that as a compliment.

"I like Black people and I am not a
racist. My neighbor is Black......"
Now this is another kind of questionable testimonial.

"I am not a racist. My husband is Black."
Well that is more convincing, but doubting Thomas will need to know the real reason for the marriage.
To inherit millions? To get an inflated alimony package? Or is it real love?

Do you embrace his extensive extended family in racial terms, or are we dealing with another bout of exceptionalism, whereby, you love the man, but automatically hate everybody else in the racial group
that he belongs to, and see them as trash.

But back to the article. What if the Black Madonna and Child image is simply an extension of a Black Isis and Horus image from ancient Egypt?
