The main thrust of this piece by Akogun Tola Adeniyi is: the Igbo want to separate from Nigeria which he leapfrogged to the conclusion : let Nigeria separate peacefully.
1. The premise can only be confirmed by a referendum of Igbo nationals.
2. Even if confirmed that does not translate into: Let the rest of the country separate into their constituent parts. The rest will simply have to bid their Igbo brethren and sisters a tearful and nostalgic goodbye. The Igbo cant insist if we go, the rest of you must go too!
If the rest see how the Igbo are thriving in their separate nation, may be that would convince them to leave the union at a later date.
As sage and poet WS puts it (supported by the recent stance of another celebrated poet Niyi Osundare),the rest of the Nigerian nationalities have the right to declare :
' I may not go with youcompanions of thebroken buoy.'
This is why I support the Senate Speaker's position that the referendum for Igbo separatism is the most urgent task facing the nation before constitutional amendment: the Constitution can only be meant for those who agree to be bound by it as willing nationals. If after the current amendment the Igbo decide to leave then the futile amendment will need to be redone for those remaining as Nigerians.
No force can stop the Igbo nation from leaving the Nigerian union ultimately if they are determined to do so by peaceful means.
If the national referendum question is ' let the Nigerian nationalities go their separate ways, Yes or No?, it will frustrate and defeat the purported Igbo yearnings because most communities in the North will put a clear ' No.'
