RE: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Let Us Separate Peacefully ByTolaAdeniyi - Newspot Nigeria

Your model is too complicated to be featured in a referendum.. There will have to be several referendums ( It would be like the British government being asked to also feature the independence of Wales and Northern Ireland in the Scottish independence referendum.  The others never agitated for independence as vociferously as Scotland and they still dont. Or, for the British to advocate that in addition to having BREXIT the European Union itself should be dissolved alongside BREXIT!  The other members of EU will simply laugh them to scorn.)

It would be unfair to the Igbo not to acknowledge that this initiative is largely Igbo even if it is not embraced by all Igbo.  What is more, it will be an Igbo dominated enclave

There is no reason to expect that the voices of non- Igbo will be heard any more than they are in the wider Nigeria and that they will receive better justice and non- marginalisation any more than the likes of Victor Banjo did in the defunct Biafra.

Better put-seperation of SE.

Not all Igbo people want out of Nigeria.

Referendum should be for a new nation carved out of the SE which anyone, Igbo or non-Igbo, may join, without having to leave where they live at present, like one can live somewhere else without being a national there.

Igbos who don't want to be part of Biafra would simply indicate so in this nation wide referendum.

Every non-Igbo who wants to be part of Biafra would also indicate.

Those who wish to leave outside the SE but as migrants elsewhere in Nigeria  may do so.

Whatever method is used, I expect Biafra to emerge.

Many Nigerians are fed up with Nigeria.

If the SS has a referendum, they will also go, as most likely we all know.

The whole neither dead nor alive excuse for nationhood that is Nigerian nationhood is something many Nigerians are tired of.

The main thrust of this piece by Akogun Tola Adeniyi is: the Igbo want to separate from Nigeria which he leapfrogged to the conclusion : let Nigeria separate peacefully.

1.  The premise can only be confirmed by a referendum of Igbo nationals.

2. Even if confirmed that does not translate into: Let the rest of the country separate into their constituent parts.  The rest will simply have to bid their Igbo brethren and sisters a tearful and nostalgic goodbye.  The Igbo cant insist if we go, the rest of you must go too!

If the rest see how the Igbo are thriving in their separate nation, may be that would convince them to leave the union at a later date.

As sage and poet WS puts it (supported by the recent stance of another celebrated poet Niyi Osundare),
the rest of the Nigerian nationalities have the right to declare :

' I may not go with you
 companions of the
broken buoy.'

This is why I support the Senate Speaker's position that the referendum for Igbo separatism is the most urgent task facing the nation before constitutional amendment:  the Constitution can only be meant for those who agree to be bound by it as willing nationals.  If after the current amendment the Igbo decide to leave then the futile amendment will need to be redone for those remaining as Nigerians.

No force can stop the Igbo nation from leaving the Nigerian union ultimately if they are determined to do so by peaceful means.

If the national referendum question is ' let the Nigerian nationalities go their separate ways, Yes or No?,  it will frustrate and defeat the purported Igbo yearnings because most communities in the North will put a clear ' No.'
