Well put.  But we are concerned with those constructed selves here.

Igboho in speaking of the Yorùba nation was not speaking of a nation so-called constructed by the Fulani for the Fulani but by a professed Yorùbá for professedYorùbá groups.

This is where academic arguments about the nature of identities may not be helpful.

Nnamdi Kanu is not a professed Efik.  He could have passed the leadership of IPOB to an Efik.  He did not.  Majority of Igbo who are following him, follow him for that reason.  Emeka Ojukwu could have passed the leadership of old Biafra to Philip Effiong from the start, he did not until he was making his get away.

The Southern Governors Forum who wanted a rotation of presidential power to the South come 2023 spoke in this realpolitik perspective in which group identities vary and influence policies and the manner in which policies are translated into governance ( could they tolerate the institution of Hisbah police in their states for example?)

We must be careful how we apply academic theories so they dont ignore or confuse  realities.  In fact many think Nigeria's problems subsist because political theories dont address realities and positions conditioned by instinctive behaviours.

I think that we should perhaps be asking questions about 'Igbo-ness' and the claims we can make about its multiplicity and/or singularity. I may be wrong but I think that some singularities in (pre/post-)colonial Africa emerged from 'counter-hegemonic' drives when the erstwhile 'loose' but 'affiliated' (and sometimes internecine) cultural and ethnic 'selves' or configurations had to '(e-)merge' to form a unified sociopolitical 'whole' (self) against a hegemonic 'other(s)'. Piggybacking on previous arguments by members of this 'intelligentsia', I believe that 'Igbo-ness', 'Yoruba-ness' and even 'anygroup-ness' aren't biological realities but are rather socially constructed.

The assumption that IPOB is an Igbo group and that the group's leader is leading an Igbo resistance is crass stupidity. What about the persons from other ethnicities in eastern Nigeria who are IPOB members?
