Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - BOKO HARAM CAPTURES ANOTHER 5 LGA IN NIGER AND SEIZES 500 TOWNS

i look for coverage re africa: i am on the al jazeera africa mailing, so that's why i notice what they cover there. when i then click on "news" which means all news, it still includes a lot of african news, not covered in any of the other main presses i see. i am not looking for caribbean news, but even if i did i am sure you're right about it receiving minor coverage.
there are always lots of discrepancies. americans do not pay much attention to africa; the french still focus on francophone and the brits on anglophone.
the world looks different depending on where you are standing. only reading the many local newspapers in senegal could i begin to grasp what the issues were there and what people thought and said.

as for the major powers wanting this or that mineral or oil, that goes without saying. they are all the same in that regard. but when it comes to promoting human rights, i don't think the russians care whatsoever, and the chinese probably not either., we can say the "west" is hypocritical, but only partially so. they care about the money, but also about the human rights and culture.

well, the chinese with their talk of "brothers" are pretty hypocritical too.

last thought; there was, and no doubt still is, a major oil pipeline from libya up to europe through italy. that must be the major prize for all involved. you might know more about that thing than i do.

Ken,

I admit that le Monde and alJazeera
do good coverage,  but the world is a big place.
Niger is not necessarily  on their radar
screen as much, unless
it  begins to trade uranium with Iran or
Mars.

Snow, or rather hail fell in Trinidad last week and
there was a coup attempt threat there,
the previous weeks. Did they cover it?
A certain President has been incarcerating his
political opponents for a year or two,
including Senators. Did they Report it?
A big fat No.

The Niger government may soon be
signing a security pact  with Moscow,
as Mali did. When Gadaffi
warned that the terrorists were digging in at
Cyrenaica, no one listened. They thought
he was crying wolf and  in any case did not care.
Sarkozhy had his eyes on Libya's gold, perhaps.
Obama didn't want to look like a wimp,
especially with a Secretary of State who
turned into a hawk. Nobody could protect
innocent civilians from his unmanned drones,
though.

I am hoping that the 500 towns should be
50 towns due to a typist error. Wishful thinking,
perhaps.

Please be cautious: **External Email**

?? i would want to see really authenticated proof of this claim, 500 towns!, before believing it. it would make screaming headlines in al jazeera, and le monde, at the least.

BOKO HARAM CAPTURES ANOTHER 5 LGA IN NIGER AND SEIZES 500 TOWNS

Boko Haram captured another 5 Local Government Areas in Niger, seized 500 towns, and moves closer to the Shiroro Power Station.

According to the chairman of Shiroro Local Government Area, terrorists are currently on a recruitment drive, promising lucrative rewards to potential recruits. As the terrorist group's rise continues, more people are joining them. Suleiman Chukuba, Suleiman Chukuba, Suleiman Chukuba,

The number of Boko Haram fighters in Shiroro's local government is incalculable.

"I have the proof being that I am the executive chairman, the chief security officer of the local government. When they go to the various communities, what they tell them is that 'We don't want primary, secondary schools. We only want Islamiyya schools."

The head of the council demanded that the federal government send more security personnel to the area to combat the insurgents who had taken up residence in Shiroro.
