Subject: Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Interview with the Alaafin of Oyo
Thank you Oga Falola.
I learned a lot from the interview with the Alaafin of Oyo. The conversation was enlightening in many ways and I thought the cultural decorum displayed through language and action was superb. I am not a student of Nigerian political and traditional history, but the Alaafin made me want to read more.
One thing that will stay with me for a long time was his rebuke (if I can describe it that way) of the proliferation (and abuse) of traditional titles abroad. We have that in the Cameroonian community too. You turn around your friend is addressed by some title, and you go really! Our own Chief Fomkem was on the lecture and can attest to the abuse of traditional titles which in the view of many, belittles our traditions.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Elias
