Dear Colleague,

Greetings to you and yours faring well in these difficult times. I am writing because Duke's English department is conducting a senior search (associate/full). Please find the advertisement text below. I write in hopes that you would share this with your networks, and indeed, that you might consider applying.

This is an auspicious time to be joining the faculty of Duke's Arts and Sciences. Felwine Sarr and Annette Gabriel-Joseph have recently joined the Romance Studies department, and Eric Mvukiyehe has joined political science. In addition to our search in English, the history department is also hiring an Africa specialist. They will bring new energy to a community of Africanists across the university and the deans have shown serious commitment to directing resources toward the study of Africa. We look forward to Duke's programs in Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa resuming when the pandemic eases, and to new opportunities opening up.

Duke's strengths include the institutional support for interdisciplinary research and teaching (including growing resources for topics related to racial inequality) , the intellectual energy of the Franklin Humanities Institute and Africa Initiative, access to the National Humanities Center as both a fellow and a colleague, and our strong graduate student body. We currently have three English Ph.D. students specializing in African literature and several others in postcolonial studies. There is useful information about Duke's robust range of benefits including dual career assistance here.

North Carolina has a unique history of African cultural expression. It was here that Omar Ibn Said penned the only texts in a non-European language by an African enslaved in the US. Today, Durham's superintendent of schools, Dr. Pascal Mubenga, hails from the DRC, and the chancellor of our neighboring HBCU, North Carolina Central University, Dr. Johnson Akinleye, is Nigerian. And this year Zweli's Zimbabwean restaurant began operating one of Duke's dining halls.

Should you have questions about the position, please feel free to be in touch with me, as chair of the search committee (tsitsi.jaji@duke.edu).

Best,

Tsitsi Jaji
