if you change the word "cultism" to mafia, i wonder if you would have to change anything else for the parallel to exist.

the gangs of my youth also existed, always in poor neighborhoods, with gang wars over turfs, eventually growing enormously as drugs became the source of wealth for young people/dealers

that's no doubt still relatively true.

the mafia was also big when i was young; the govt's commitment to end it severely cut down on them, at the time of rfk.

but in italy they still exist. especially in the south, the more impoverished south.
